Writing a Resume
July 24th 2007 14:44
I found a job online yesterday that would be great experience for me. Only problem was I didn't have a resume. Why didn't I have a basic one written up that I could edit for different jobs? Mostly because I'd never needed one before, but also because I knew it would look a little sad (aka mostly blank).
Another problem I had was I didn't really know where to start. I knew some "tips and tricks" stuff, but I wanted a list of what all was supposed to be on my resume. So I did a search and found a wonderful site entitled "How to Write a Resume (When You Have No Job Experience)." Perfect! (Note: I do have job experience, just not related job experience).
After reading that article I then went to this one. This resume format was for people who've had job experience. I felt I was a little between the two, so I'll tell you how mine looks.
1) I've got my name and all contact information at the top.
2) I put my objective.
3) I put my education. This is a little different from both of the links, but I remember hearing if your job experience isn't related, and your education is, put that first. Since I'm applying for a proofreading job and my major is English, that is more important than a job in retail.
*Also under my education I listed the honor society I am in.*
4) Now is where I put my employment.
5) Skills are what I listed next. I put things like typing and MS Word (and I'm still debating if I should include this website on my resume or not. What do you think?)
6) Lastly I put "References available upon request."
Now all I need to do is get that job!
