College of Cash - finding money for college

Getting Paid to Not Work

May 26th 2008 14:55
This is amazing. It's kind of a landmark day for me. I'm actually getting paid to NOT be at work! Whoa! This is the first job I've had where they close on holidays other than Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. Normally, I'd be working today and getting paid at my regular rate of pay.

But not today! Today I'm not working, and I get paid an extra half hour more than I normally work. I. Am. Happy.

I can definitely get used to this getting paid to not work thing.

I must admit I woke up freaked out a little bit because I had to keep making sure today was really Memorial Day and that I really didn't have to be at work. But now that I'm over that, I'm thoroughly enjoying my day off.

Thinking of Getting a Second Job

April 10th 2008 14:26
It seems I'm always looking for a job doesn't it? You would think I was a workaholic, but really I'm probably one of the laziest people you could ever meet.

Anyway, why the second job? Because I started realizing that when my student loans come due, (whether they are consolidated or not), that the total due each month would be somewhere around $250. I will have $225 left over after I pay my other bills. That leaves me $25 short of paying all my bills, and leaves me no money to save.

For this job hunt though, I'm only going to look around my apartment, within walking distance. I don't want to buy gas, especially now that it's up to $3.50/gal. However, I've also thought I could find a job by the South branch of the library (where I work on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and work from open until 3:30 and then go to the library and work 4-8. Then I'm only driving to one area. (The south branch is in this strip mall type deal).

So we'll see what happens. I'm also thinking I might wait until after Memorial day, because I might go and visit family or something. (And I don't want to have to request off the Sunday before Memorial day if I've just started).

I'll give you an update on this whenever there happens to be one!

I Can Pay My Bills!

February 14th 2008 11:04
It has been a fantastic week for me. Monday was a "follow-up orientation" at my job, and while I was there I brought up getting more hours like they had mentioned in my first orientation (and possibly interview). Right after this orientation the human resources guy started working on a plan for me to get more hours. About an hour or two later he had a plan, but it had to be worked out with a few other people and he said he'd get back to me.

Today at work I found out I will be getting the extra hours! I'm so excited because now I can actually pay all of my bills. Well, I will be able to once I start working those extra hours. Recently my inflow/outflow looked like this:

incoming: $400
outgoing: $700

Those numbers are approximate, but you get the idea. I had to keep taking money out of my emergency fund. And that was killing me. I'll probably have to do so again this month, but by the end of March I will be right on track. I am very happy!

Oh, and the new inflow/outflow will look like:

incoming: $800
outgoing: $700

So, I will have about an extra $100 to help pay off the tuition credit cards faster, or to put money back into the emergency fund. I have somewhat of a plan that I may talk about soon and ask your advice. But it's hard to plan when I don't know exactly how much I'll be making.

We're Hiring, But You Can't Apply

January 22nd 2008 21:16
I worked in retail for four and a half years. That little store made sense. Maybe because it wasn't a big place, and wasn't owned by someone far away. But other retail companies don't seem to make much sense to me.

I went out today looking for a second job. I was going back to Hobby Lobby to see if they had any applications. The last time I had been there they had hiring signs, but no applications were in yet. That was more than a week ago. So, I go in today and the girl tells me there are no applications again. What? Why do you have hiring signs up if you don't have any applications? I've already tried to apply online, but their website doesn't let that happen. It says to go to the specific store you would like to work for.

There was one other place that has done that to me before. It was the Children's Place in this same city. It doesn't speak well of these companies that they would put up a sign that they're hiring, but are not organized enough to have applications ready to give out.

Maybe I'm just annoyed because I will have to go back to Hobby Lobby again, but I still think it is pretty ridiculous.

Does anyone else have this problem on a regular basis or am I just lucky like that?

Good News on the Job Front

January 18th 2008 20:24
A mere 26 hours after my interview, and after they told me they were interviewing until the beginning of next week, I got a call saying I got the job!!!

Success! Of course I danced around a little bit after I hung up the phone. haha. My first real day isn't until the 28th of this month. I can't wait. The plan now is to find a second job to compliment this first job. I've thought about doing some tutoring online. I found it awhile ago, but didn't do anything with it. Then Paid Twice wrote about it a few times and then mentioned how well she liked it so far. That reinterested me in it. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't meet the memory requirement, so I'd have to fix that first.

Also, I filled out an application at that family business place I mentioned earlier. She said they'd start calling people back this weekend, so I'll cross my fingers for that one too. Although, I don't know what the hours are like. We'll see.

Anyway, that was my happy news! Hope everyone else has a fantastic weekend!

The Interview This Morning

January 16th 2008 20:04
It was strange getting up before 8am. I haven't done that in a while. But it was okay because I had an interview - which I am still excited about now even though it's over.

I think it went well. One lady asked me all two pages of questions while the other two wrote down my answers. And I made them laugh, hopefully that was a good thing

A Glimmer of Hope on the Job Front

January 15th 2008 20:24
My phone started ringing about 2:30 in the afternoon today and I was immediately excited. I thought to myself, "It has to be for an interview because no one else would be calling me right now." And when I looked at the number it had "no name" above it, (it says no name when it's not stored in my phone); I knew I was right!

So, I finally got a call for an interview. It's at the library, to which I just applied yesterday when they put the new open position up. So I'm kind of surprised they called already, but I'm definitely fine with it

And the Search Continues

January 14th 2008 13:14
I have applied to many places so far and nothing is happening. I faxed my resume to one place yesterday and turned in an application to another. I keep telling myself someone will have to hire me sometime.

On my way to turn in the application I saw a sign that said "now hiring." It's for this company, (I'm not even sure what they do), that has people stand outside and wave at the drivers going by. That is what they are hiring for. I'm so desperate for a job that I took down the phone number! haha Well, I don't know if I'm desperate, but I really want one. Should I really call that one

A Quiet Monday

January 7th 2008 20:44
I don't have much to say today. I'm really stressed about not having a job yet. I get like this a lot. I think maybe I need to take on the mindset that Paid Twice talks about in one of her posts today. The long term goals are still in sight. It has only been a week. I need to keep reminding myself of that.

With that, I'm on my way to turn in an application.

The After-Graduation Job Search

January 4th 2008 15:05
When I was looking for a job at the beginning of my final semester in college I jotted down my thought processes here. Since that worked out so well, I thought I would do it again.

I have already applied to a few places, but it was a little before or during the holidays. One job I inquired about online sent me a paper application in the mail that I sent back yesterday. The other jobs I've applied for were full-time jobs at the college from which I just graduated. However, they are still on break so I won't hear from them for another few days even if they did want to interview me
