College of Cash - finding money for college

Updates to Scholarship Search Sites

October 25th 2007 13:30
Since this site is all about helping college students, and those who are soon-to-be, I thought I should go back and check out the "scholarship websites" (the ones that search for scholarships for you), that I listed back at the beginning of this blog, to make sure everything still worked.

Well, I found out that gocollege.com that I had listed didn't seem to be producing a scholarship search. It was just lots of reading on what scholarships are, what grants are, what kinds are out there, but never links to any. So I took that off. Collegedata.com had also had its own post (still does) but I've also included it in the main page that is highlighted under "spotlight posts" to the left.

I hope this makes things easier for everyone to find free money! Scholarship contests run all year long, so be sure to keep checking them out.

Good luck!

Scholarship Opportunities

This will be a list compiling all of the scholarships I mention on my blog so that you can find them easily. The links will be to the posts in which I mentioned the scholarship. I will update this often, keeping only those scholarships up that are active. You'll be able to find the link to this post under "spotlight posts" on the left of the blog.

Good Luck to all of you and your search for free money!

Brickfish Hero Worship Scholarship

October 21st 2007 16:16
Anytime I get an email about a scholarship that I think the majority of people can enter I'll post about it.

Today's scholarship is Brickfish Hero Worship Scholarship.

For this scholarship, you must write a short essay, (perhaps blog post), in 500 words or less, about who is your hero and why. The winner, picked by Brickfish, gets a $750 scholarship. The person whose entry gets the most attention via the internet gets a $250 scholarship.

This contest runs from Oct. 10th until Nov. 12th. You have to sign up with Brickfish.com (which appears to be a blogsite) to enter. Anyone ages 14 and up are eligible to participate. The legal jargon rules can be found here. (PDF)

On the right of the main page for this scholarship you can see how many entries are in, how many votes have been cast, etc. Check it out and good luck!

There is a new scholarship called Create Your Own Scholarship, presented by Fastweb.com and Citibank.

From the main page:
"Tell us about the scholarship you'd like to create and FastWeb members will vote for their favorite idea. The winner receives a $4,000 scholarship to give away plus an additional $4,000 to keep for themselves. You make the scholarship, you vote for it, and FastWeb pays for it!"

You have to be a member of fastweb.com to submit an idea. That's okay though, because it's free. (I wrote about fastweb in a previous article).

I already have two ideas to submit to this contest, which starts today! The last day to submit ideas is October 28th. After they narrow the selections down to twelve finalists, the voting will begin. That happens November 5th and ends November 19th.

Other important information can be found in the FAQ section. Things like, you can submit more than one idea, and you can vote for you own entry if it's a finalist, you can vote once every 24 hours, etc.

The rules (aka legal jargon stuff) can be found here.

Good luck with your entries!

New and Interesting Scholarships!

October 9th 2007 15:19
Collegescholarships.org has a few of their own scholarships, as well as links on the left side to other scholarships. The first three listed on the page I linked to are all closed to entries. (More about this in a minute). The others, "Library and Information Sciences," "Minority" and "Women" are all accepting applications until December 1st, 2007.

You should definitely check them out!

As for the first three, the one being voted on is the "Bogging" one. I believe the other two already have winners. You can vote for which blog you like best for the first one!

These are the 20 finalists. I found out about this because one of the blogs I read regularly (Poorer than You by Stephanie) is one of the finalists.

You should definitely go vote. And maybe think about starting your own blog and entering the blogging scholarship next year?

College List (pt. 10)

October 3rd 2007 15:46
It's been a while since I've posted one of these. Sorry about that.

In an attempt to be the most helpful site in affording college, I will be doing a continuing piece on specific colleges and universities in the United States and their scholarships/websites. (I will try hitting ones outside of the US at a later time). My brief summary of each will include a link to their financial aid page as well as other information I think may be helpful.
