My New Grocery Budget
January 29th 2008 12:03
I wrote on Saturday that there were two links I would be expanding on for myself. This is the one that may turn into a regular post if it keeps me on track. So, thanks to paid twice and the msn money boards for the inspiration!
For the month of February I am trying to keep my grocery spending as low as possible. (And then keep it that way for the rest of the year, of course!) My goal? $50 for the month. You might think I'm crazy, but really I'm only feeding myself. Plus, I already have simple things like peanut butter, jelly, plastic baggies, etc so I didn't have to buy them for the month.
I actually already bought some things for February because on Sunday I was looking through the ads for Kroger online and saw they were having some serious 10/$10 sales on lots of things I love to eat. I even included carrots in there - and I don't normally eat "healthy." So that was good for me. In total I spent $33.97 on 30 items.
There were only four things I bought that weren't on sale. And the bread was only 86 cents not on sale, so that almost doesn't count.
The worst would be the butter. $2.49. But I can't make myself buy that hydrogenated crap. (Thanks to some random Oprah I watched). The ingredients in my butter say "cream."
Anyway, I have $16.03 left for February. I will be going back to buy bread and milk at some point, and maybe some other stuff, but I'm hoping I can manage to be under the $50.
**Just to compare, I had a $50 gift card to Kroger and I used it all plus about $3 for January's food. That food would have lasted me all of this week as well, but I wanted to make sure I got some of the stuff I like on sale. Like the seapak popcorn shrimp. Never would have bought that otherwise. Yum!
