College of Cash - finding money for college

Too Many Bank Accounts

October 17th 2007 13:18
Having five bank accounts makes absolutely no sense. That’s why I’m going to change it. There is a reason for each of these accounts, but a few of them don’t make sense anymore. Let’s look at why:

Savings #1: This is in a credit union in my hometown, which is three hours away from where I’ve been at school. I have it because I’ve had it since I was ten years old.

Checking #1: See above, only I didn’t create the checking until age eighteen.

Checking #2: I opened this one near my college to cash a check I had received. They would not cash it unless I paid them an $8 fee, or opened an account.

INGdirect: This reason is obvious, I get free money.

Citibank savings: I got a free $100 for opening this. Free money is fantastic. (This is now going to be somewhat of a “college fund” for my little brothers).

Do I really need three savings accounts and two checking accounts? No. Obviously not. Since I won’t be moving back to my hometown after graduation, I intend on closing the two accounts at the credit union.

There are a couple reasons for closing the extra accounts, besides the fact that it’s just crazy to have that many.

Reason #1: If I can put all the money together in one (like ING) then I can earn more “free money” in interest there.

Reason #2: Having that many accounts to check gets tiresome. Plus, the more accounts you have the more liable you are to get your identity stolen, right?

I don’t know if any of you have the same issue, but it’s just too much. There are better things to waste time on than having five different bank accounts. Like watching football!

Online Savings Accounts Revisited

October 1st 2007 18:25
I just wanted to give you all an update on the status of Online Savings Accounts that I wrote about back in May. The majority of the info is over at My Money Blog, so I probably don't need to re-hash it.

One bank I didn't talk about in the Online Savings Account post (and not mentioned at My Money Blog) was Citibank's Ultimate Savings Account. Currently, they are still at 4.75%. Since most of the others have changed so far, this one may not be far behind.

MSN Moneyblog smart spending

September 20th 2007 22:53
Sorry there won't be a regular post today. I wasn't anywhere near a computer since 8am! (Although, I'll definitely take the working and making money!)

I just wanted to say I am mentioned in MSN's Moneyblog Smart Spending. You can find me under "If it's free, it's for me: Gratis goodies online." I'm the one mentioned with the survey sites, of course!

It was originally supposed to be in a regular article, but apparently they decided to launch a blog over there and the "article" got included over there! Go check out their new blog!

Best Posts of Summer

September 11th 2007 15:52
I decided to highlight some of the better or more interesting posts I’ve written this summer, without taking too much from under the “Popular Posts” category on the left-hand side. They are, of course, all about making money or saving money!

If you’ve read them before, it’s always nice to re-read things (wink wink) and for those of you who haven’t, I hope you’ll read and enjoy them!

In no particular order:

Why Amazon.com is My Best Friend Right Now – shows the steps I took to only spending $43 on school books for my last semester in college!

Job Search - was a sort-of continuation of an earlier post deciding what the next course of action would be if I didn’t get an on-campus job.

Why It Pays to be a Good Worker – explores the idea of always working hard for a company even when you think no one is looking. I could add to this post saying I got a $250 bonus when I left for my last semester of college.

Why Don’t People Want Free Money – a mini-rant because I still don’t know why people don’t like free money. It’s FREE people! Haha!

Why I Only Pay $10 a Month for My Cell Phone – I look at all the things people have on their cell phones that they probably have elsewhere and thus, don’t need to pay extra for!

5 Ways to Keep Dorm Life Cheaper – I listed five items you will probably need, (or at least want to buy), when you go off to college and how to get them cheaper!

Other links you should check out that are highlighted on the left already:

survey sites archives for those of you looking to make a little extra side money

college list archives for those of you researching colleges and their scholarships and financial aid packages.

Happy reading!

Found Money on the Ground

September 6th 2007 14:21
What do you do with money you find on the ground? I am definitely one of those people who pick up pennies! I happened to find this question at We’re in Debt and from that found another interesting blog, The Found Money Jar.

The Found Money Jar is intriguing. Each day they list the amount of change found on the ground, as well as bottles and cans collected that can be recycled for change. It made me want to keep track of the money I find instead of just immediately sticking it into a jar.

But after you find it, what do you do with it? It seems FMJ invests the change in the stock market. I am going to deposit the change into an online savings account that I already have set up. This account is actually for my little brothers, a sort of “college fund.” (The found change is not the only money going in there!) They are ages five and three, so I will be able to find plenty of change and make regular contributions by the time they are college age. The change may not be much, but as we college students know, any free money helps!

What do you do with the money you find?

I don’t know about you, but I hate accepting money from other people, or even when people buy me dinner. The only times I don’t argue with them over this are birthdays. (Money is always acceptable as a birthday gift!)

However, many of you know my current tuition situation (and the mini-update). My next plan of action is to put the first $3000 onto the new card and pay a little more than the minimum. Currently, I haven’t found a job, so I want to wait to put the tuition on my card

Free Money Update

August 29th 2007 22:19
Sorry for such a late post! Classes are interrupting my posting routine. So today is a short update post.

Yesterday I mentioned how no one wanted free money, not from surveys, and not as a bonus from an online bank. However, DB actually listened and last night actually signed up through my referral link to ING direct. (Amazingly I had only told him a day or two before
