College of Cash - finding money for college

New Year's Financial Resolutions

January 1st 2008 18:38
I'll be making monthly goals after I do the net worth update and seeing how well I met last month's goals. However, the following goals will be for the year.

1) (Most importantly) Get a job!!
2) Start a Roth IRA - even if I can't fully fund it this year I want to at least start one
3) Pay off tuition cards by August. (Well, one by May and the other by August).

I think I'll just go with the three for this year. Hopefully #1 will be done by next week sometime? (I'm optimistic). The Roth thing won't happen until the credit cards are paid off.

Heck, let's make two more.

4) Keep at least $1000 in the EF (hopefully more).
5) Make net worth go up by $8000. (If I pay off the tuition cards then that's almost $6000 right there).

Do you have any New Year's financial resolutions?

Credit Card Shuffle

December 26th 2007 14:40
Many of you know I decided to charge a little over $6000 worth of my tuition for my last semester of school. Well, I have to make a new plan with them.

Here's why: the new credit card (Card A) won't increase my limit to allow me to transfer all of Card B's amount to Card A. And Card B is soon to lose the 0% APR.

My solution: I have another credit card that I increased the limit on as my "backup plan." (Apparently it was a good plan haha!) They have a few balance transfer offers that have way better than the 11.99% that Card B will be, as well as lower rates than private loans would have had. So looking at it that way I'm in good shape.

There are two offers that I am debating. One is 0% APR until May 1st, 2008. The other is 4.99% until the balance is paid off. (They both will have a fee unfortunately).

I think I'll be going with the 0%, because I hope I can have it paid off by then. (If not I can always transfer it back to Card B at a low rate, right?)

Argh, I really wish there was an easier way to do this debt thing.

Merry Christmas!

December 25th 2007 16:43
Merry Christmas everyone! (If you don't celebrate it, Merry Tuesday!) I hope everyone is having a wonderful time! I am.

I've pre-empted the regular survey earnings update for this Thursday. I've already passed my goal and I think I will just give an update on the last day of the month instead. Taking its place will be a scholarship. Posting should get back to normal soon after that. See you then!

Posting Update

December 20th 2007 23:38
Next week is a holiday week for me, so I may not be around here much. But I do have some posts already written that are scheduled to appear if I cannot be near a computer.

However, if anyone has a guest post they would like to contribute (related to college or personal finance) please email me. I would love to include your post! If you want to do this, send your post in the body of an email with "guest post" in the subject line so I know what it's for. Also include your name and a link to your blog (if you have one) so I can link to it. Thanks!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and a fun and relaxing (and safe!) holiday!

Quick Update on My Posting for Next Week

December 15th 2007 02:35
I'm done with school!! I wrote about my plan for after graduation a while ago - which was basically where I was living. I've moved into that apartment. However, we haven't put cable or internet in it yet. So there will probably be limited posting next week - just a warning.

Maybe next week should just be spent out looking for a job.

Why Didn't I Major in Finance?

December 11th 2007 16:39
When I woke up at 7am because my left hand was numb (from my knee being on it) somehow I started thinking about budgeting. Who wakes up at 7am and thinks of budgets? And the crazier part is, I wasn't even thinking about my own.

As a background to this story: A guy I work with was telling me about some credit card debt his family managed to put onto his card that he now has to pay off. Plus he's trying to move into his own apartment closer to work

Too Many Bank Accounts Cut Down to Size

December 5th 2007 14:41
I posted back in October about how I had too many bank accounts - five to be exact. When I was home for Thanksgiving break, I fixed that. I closed the credit union accounts I had back in my hometown.

Unfortunately, not before I had a mess-up because of all these accounts

What to do with Gift Money

November 27th 2007 15:32
As I mentioned on Friday, Sunday (the 25th) was my birthday. I received a ton of cash. (Which I love, by the way). My problem is what to do with it.

I could put all or most of it towards debt, and take a nice chunk out of my credit card (tuition) debt. But I got that money as a gift. Shouldn't I spend it on something I want? Or at least spend some of it on something fun? But I know if I just blew it all, later I'd think about all that extra money I had and now it's all gone and there would be nothing to show for it

Mini - update

November 21st 2007 01:09
Sorry for the lack of a post today. It's been a busy one working and then packing to get out of this dorm on time before they lock me in! haha!

Anyway, look forward to another scholarship post tomorrow, and a survey earnings update on Thursday (although that won't be much this week - I haven't had much time to do surveys

When Money Isn't Everything

October 24th 2007 15:32
I started this blog with two ideas in mind. One, to help every other college student out there so they wouldn't get into the debt I found myself swimming in; and two, possibly make some side money as a nice bonus (to help pay off some tuition, or maybe for books, etc).

About a week or two ago, I got an inquiry about putting an ad on my site. I was intrigued, and the possibility of gaining revenue from it was exciting. However, when I got to look at what the ad was for I had to stop and think. (It was a payday loan type deal). I tried to rationalize it for a couple days, thinking I could put a warning above it. But I just couldn't bring myself to go through with it. I don't agree with those loans (heck, I don't even like Sallie Mae loans!) so how could I put them on my blog
