College of Cash - finding money for college

A Look Back on Feb. 2008 Goals

March 5th 2008 10:03
I only made two goals for February because I expected it to be a really down month. The first goal was to make $25 from my survey sites and the second was to get more hours at my job (or get a second job).

Here's how I did:

Goal #1 - Check! I ended February with $27.75 worth of earnings from the surveys.

Goal #2 - Check! I got more hours at my current job, just at a different branch. I am kind of surprised it happened as fast as it did, but I definitely won't complain.

And I thought it was going to be a down month, when actually, my net worth went up $21! February turned out to be an unexpectedly excellent month. Yay!

I'm still thinking about what goals I want to make for March, so you'll probably see a post about those tomorrow.

Sometimes I Hate Shopping

February 25th 2008 10:54
Yesterday I decided to go shopping since I had a gift card. (Plus, I felt like I needed to get out of the apartment). So, off I went to Kohl's with my $20 gift card from Christmas.

Well, I had been shopping sometime last month with gift cards from Christmas as well. This time I went and all the stuff I had bought earlier was now on sale. As in 60-80% off! I think everything they had in my size too. How annoying. I don't know that it was more than $4 extra off each thing than what I had paid originally, but still. That would have been at least $10 extra I could have spent on another shirt!

But I did find some other good stuff this time. I bought some gray dress pants for $14 and a black sweater for $7.20. Both of those are mainly for work, since I didn't know if my old khakis were really apropriate. (At my old job I was climbing ladders and sitting on the ground and all kinds of things in them). In the end, I had to pay about $3 over what my gift card covered, but $3 for two things is okay by me. I just really wish I had waited to buy the other stuff, because I could have bought more!

Stupid sales. Doesn't that drive anyone else crazy?

The Current Debt Reduction Plan

February 22nd 2008 10:52
And the plan to be able to live off what I make from just the library job actually.

Here is my problem that will be coming in June: the rest of my student loans will be in repayment. (So far I only have the one nelnet one). But come June I will have about 5 or 6 more to pay.

The following is my plan of action:

1) Pay off car in May with some money from my EF.

2) Consolidate all of the federal student loans in May. This would make 3 loan payments total - nelnet, this one, and the private student loan.

When my car is paid off, this will get rid of a $155 a month payment that I could use towards student loan payments. I had wanted to use some money and pay off most of one of the credit cards, but then that might leave too many monthly payments that I can't afford. (Because the credit card wouldn't be totally paid off and I would still have a monthly payment there). I will have to see how much the monthly payments would be on my student loans once consolidated. If both the consolidated federal loans plus the private loan payments are less than $100 a month, I might be able to pay off the credit card first and free up some money that way.

Basically, it's all still up in the air, but I like to run numbers and do random math equations. You know, because I'm an English major and that makes sense right?

I Want an Economic Stimulus Check

February 18th 2008 11:03
I want one, I want one, I want one! But of course, I don't get one. I was a student all of last year, and my mom claimed me as a dependent for last year. That means, no $600 check for me.

I'm really bummed about that, because $600 would have been fantastic. I could have made a nice payment towards my tuition credit cards that I always talk about. Oh, well.

I guess that means some very hard work needs to get done to get rid of this debt.

Any other students out there in the same boat?

Jan. Goals Update and New Feb. 08 Goals

February 6th 2008 12:17
I only had two goals for the month of January. The first was the same as my New Year's Goals: to get a job. I did accomplish this one.

The second goal was to make $20 from my survey sites for the month. I did this one too.

So I guess there is some good news after the mess that is my net worth, since I made my goals.

Time for some new ones that I can hopefully make.

Goal #1 for Feb:
Make $25 from my survey sites. I just joined another one, so maybe this will be possible?

Goal #2:
Get a second job, or get more hours at my first job. There are no more hours to be had in my department at the library, but the main circulation desk always needs people. At least that's what I was told. And my boss encouraged me to do so. Hopefully this works out. As for a second job, I've applied to two more places since I got hired for the library job. Maybe they'll be calling soon. I'll cross my fingers, but I won't hold my breath.

Once again I'm only making two goals for this month. I expect my net worth to be dropping again, so I don't even want to think about that. Soon everything will be in order.

Fighting the Cable Guy

January 30th 2008 12:31
My roommate and I got cable and internet at the very end of December. We were going to have wireless put on both laptops, but decided to only do one because it was something like $40 each for installation. When we called to cancel the lady had said to just tell the installation guy and he would take it off of our bill. Of course he tells us they'll credit our account on our next bill.

Guess what didn't happen. Exactly, no $40 credit to our bill that came about a week ago. So, my roommate tried to call last Thursday. Wait 30 mintues on hold. No luck. So we got on their website around the same time to "chat" with one of their people. After about a 20 minute wait on there, she tells us they don't do billing questions. By that time it was 5:30 and they were closing. Try again later

My New Grocery Budget

January 29th 2008 12:03
I wrote on Saturday that there were two links I would be expanding on for myself. This is the one that may turn into a regular post if it keeps me on track. So, thanks to paid twice and the msn money boards for the inspiration!

For the month of February I am trying to keep my grocery spending as low as possible. (And then keep it that way for the rest of the year, of course!) My goal? $50 for the month. You might think I'm crazy, but really I'm only feeding myself. Plus, I already have simple things like peanut butter, jelly, plastic baggies, etc so I didn't have to buy them for the month

Well, I Have Never...

January 28th 2008 12:04
...received a scam email before. Yes, I've had my inbox filled with many spam emails about enlargement products and that kind of junk, but I had never gotten a scam one telling me I've won tons of money. So this was kind of interesting to me. I decided to search it on the internet for fun. This link comes up with what I received. (If you scroll down closer to the bottom it gives you a sample email).

Actually, let me post my email here
