College of Cash - finding money for college

Question for Readers

April 5th 2008 22:07
If I applied for that credit card I wrote about yesterday, but I don't call to activate, will it cancel the balance transfers I requested? Is it like I never applied for that card if I don't activate it?

I'm just curious because I thought all the money transfers and things would show up on the online account before I received my card, but they are not on there yet.

Hmm, this could be interesting. Does anyone know for sure?

I had gotten tons of mail to my Mom's house and when she sent it all with my Easter basket, I went through it and saw a few balance transfer offers with new credit cards. One of the things I received was for HSBC. A no fee balance transfer offer at 0% for a year. I thought I would put all of my tuition credit card debt together on one to make my life simpler.

How could that go wrong? Well, this is me we're talking about, so something has to.

The company decides it's only giving me a $1000 limit and only transferring $850 from one of my cards. Ugh. I get an email from them saying that, so I email them to say cancel everything I don't want it. They respond that this isn't possible.

So now I have three different payments to make instead of the one I wanted or the two I had. Ridiculous. That's what I get for thinking credit card debt could be simplified I guess.

Now the problem is, I'm not sure which debt to pay off first. Part of me wants to pay off the $850 (by raiding my emergency fund) so I can just cancel that card because they made me angry. The other part of me wants to pay off the card that the $850 is coming off of, because in May it will start incurring interest.

What to do? Any thoughts?

April 2008 Goals

April 3rd 2008 10:49
This month I think I'm going to start with the tuition cards.

So, goal #1 - pay an extra $20 towards one of my credit cards. (I have $12 worth of checks from pinecone right now. All I need is an extra $8).

Goal #2 - Make $35 from surveys.

Goal #3 - Net worth increase of more than $5.

I think I'm going to stick with those three. There are no birthdays in April that I need to buy for, so things should go smoothly. (Last month, at the beginning, I had forgotten I needed to buy two birthday presents and that cut down on the money I thought I was going to have).

Looking Back on March 2008 Goals

April 2nd 2008 10:47
It's time for my monthly look back at the goals I've made and how I've done. Without further adieu...

Goal #1 - was to make $30 worth of survey money. Check! I made $35.

Goal #2 - was to pay an extra $10 to one of my tuition cards. I failed at this one, I think mostly because I forgot about it. I only paid an extra $6.

Goal #3 - was to keep the net worth line moving up. Check! It was a paltry $5 move upwards, but at least it wasn't down.

Two out of three isn't so bad I guess. Hopefully next month I can do better.

When I had first decided to put the last of my final semester's tuition on credit, I wanted my new card to give me a second credit limit increase so that all of my tuition would be at 0% until August. Then, they denied my application for an increase in November or December. Which is what created the Credit Card Shuffle.

Well, when I went to make a payment for this month on that newer credit card, I saw that they had randomly given me a credit limit increase, in the exact amount I had asked for earlier. What for? Why now?

I thought about moving the stuff from the one card to this newer one, but then I saw that it has a 3% balance transfer fee attached now.

That is kind of lame. So I think I'm going to keep all the money where it is at for now.

Laying Out the Full Budget

March 18th 2008 10:40
I have randomly mentioned some of my different budget categories and how much they are (gas, groceries), but I thought my recent posts about my student loans would make more sense if I laid out my budget here.

rent - $200 (technically I think it's $198 but rounding makes the math easier when I'm deciding things quickly

An Update to My Less Depressing Post

Last week I was stressing about loans that were coming in June. I sent out some emails to figure out some math and things. Here's what happened.

By Thursday night I had already received reply emails from Sallie Mae and the loan consolidation place

Gas Prices are Terrible

March 10th 2008 11:03
Everyone knows. Everyone talks about it. But I want to include my rant on the subject as well.

I think I've only paid for gas twice when it has been over $3.00. (I always try and wait it out until it gets to at least $2.99). I had to buy gas last Thursday, because the little orange light came on. The price? $3.07. I drove past the two gas stations on my way to work (which were 3.16 and 3.19) and went to the one that was around the corner from my work. (The other branch of work, not the one I walk to

I have two cards that I refer to as my tuition credit cards. One will be losing the 0% APR in May, and the other in August. I want to start paying more towards one of the cards to make it disappear faster, but I can't decide which one. There are lots of other intangibles involved here as well. For instance, if I can get one low enough so that I could get it below $1000 by May (by raiding the EF) then I would do that instead of paying off my car.

I can't decide if paying off my car, or paying off the credit cards first would be a better decision. And, if I try to pay off the credit cards first, it might take so long that my car gets paid off anyway before I'm done with the cards. (My last payment will be due January 2009

Goals for March 2008

March 6th 2008 11:03
After I did so well last month as far as goals (and the net worth surprise) I'm excited to make new goals for the month! Let's get right to it...

Goal #1 - I like making goals related to the surveys. It seems I always earn just above what I make my goal. So this month I'm going to say I want to make $30 for the month from surveys. Wish me luck
