College of Cash - finding money for college

I read lots of articles and blog posts online about saving money, or ways to "find" money in your budget, etc. Most of them say the same thing. I keep reading them, thinking maybe there will be something in there that I haven't already taken way farther than what most people do (and sometimes I didn't really do it on purpose, it just happened), but there isn't anything that is relevant to me.

For example: "Shave $10 off your grocery bill." Umm, what? I don't think I could eat well enough to stay alive if I could only spend $40 a month on groceries. That's $10 a week. If one of you out there can do that, you are truly amazing. Let me know how you did it. I already eat a lot of sandwiches. Would that be all I eat?

or there is "move to a cheaper apartment." Well, I pay $200 a month for the apartment I'm in. I have a roommate (rent is actually $400 for this place), so that takes care of that argument as well. There isn't anything cheaper than $200 a month.

or how about "use less water/electric, unplug things you're not using to avoid the phantom usage." Check. My tv and vcr are plugged into one of those power strips, and that's turned off pretty much all the time, unless I'm watching tv. Laptop is always off and unplugged as soon as I'm done on it. I think we have two or three lamps and a microwave that are plugged in all the time. That's it.

or even "walk to work/ride your bike, carpool, etc." Done. Work is two blocks from my house. It takes longer to drive there than it does to walk because of the traffic lights.

There are many other things that are somewhat related to those as well. I don't drink pop - mostly just drink water. I only buy things on sale; I'd use coupons if our crappy newspaper had any relevant ones; I buy the generic meds; just started using freecycle; I use the library instead of buying books; I don't buy anything that's fun - only really spend money on food and bills at this point; I do the survey thing to make extra money to send to my tuition cards, etc, etc, etc.

Is there anything else out there to do? I know there's "get a second job" and I'm working on that as well. Someone, please, tell me something I don't know.

I haven't put any money into my emergency fund since December. That's when I was still a student, living in the dorms, and working two student jobs. Ever since January, I've been taking money out. And it's been driving me crazy.

January through March I had to take money out to pay for my regular expenses, since I wasn't making enough money at my job to cover all my bills. I got more hours near the end of February, but the pay schedule was crazy, so I didn't get to feel the full effects of that until last month.

However, last month I took out $1,000 from my emergency fund to pay off my car. So, it's been five months since I've been able to put money back in my savings.

This month I received a belated "congratulations graduate" card with $50 and it was a three paycheck month. I put in $100 to my emergency fund. yay!

I decided that $100 was a good amount for me to put into my emergency fund, because it put me a little above the $1000 mark.

Now I feel a little better that if something were to go wrong, I could handle it. I'm also happy, because I've always been a saver. I like having money in my account, and I've never really liked to spend it on "stuff."

The Best $50 I've Spent in Awhile

May 13th 2008 15:47
You all know my grocery budget is $50 and that gas for my car is budgeted at $30 per month. But this month I spent $50 on gas, and it was the best $50 ever.

I got to go to my hometown and actually see my family for the first time in three months. There was a birthday party, and mother's day, and my favorite food in the whole world two days in a row.

What was the best $50 you've ever spent? (Or what was the best money you've ever spent period, not necessarily $50).

May 2008 Goals

May 5th 2008 10:54
Let's just get right to it, shall we?

Goal #1 - Get my net worth into the -$31k range. I think this is doable, only about $300 needed to move up.

Goal #2 - Apply to at least two places, since I'm looking for a second job. I have one in mind already, if it hasn't been taken off the website.

Goal #3 - Earn $35 or more from survey sites this month. I didn't make this goal last month, so I'm keeping it the same this month.

Goal #4 - Post at least 20 times this month. I didn't post very much last month; things got crazy and I only had 16 posts. So I'm making posting one of my goals.

That's it! Crossing my fingers for a good month.

This year seems to be flying by quickly. I can't believe it's May already. Anyway, here's how I did on last month's goals.

1) Pay an extra $20 to tuition cards. Check! Paid an extra $85 above what I normally pay to my cards.

2) Make $35 from surveys. I did not make this one. Only got to $23 for the month.

3) Net worth increase of more than $5. CHECK! Maybe I should have said "more than $500!"

Two out of three isn't so bad. And I can't really control how many surveys I get in a month. Here's to hoping May will be as productive!

I Think I Want a Brita Filter

April 26th 2008 10:13
I went to the grocery store with my roommate about a week ago and decided to look at the water filters they had. I'm really wanting one (I don't know if I specifically need a Brita one), because I don't really like to buy water at the store in bottles because water is almost free out of the tap, and I am a tree-hugging hippie who hates making waste. (We recycle pretty much anything we can in this apartment!)

I can't drink the water in this city for some reason. It just doesn't seem right. I don't really wash my face with it either - which is why I stopped drinking it. It makes my skin really dry, and it even broke out for a long time while I was living in the dorms. So, I'm skiddish about this water. But I thought it might be better if it was filtered

I Was Wrong

April 23rd 2008 10:45
I went back to the nelnet site today, and found out I was wrong in yesterday's post. The due date and the little red numbers were back on the page, so the consolidation loan hasn't gone through yet.

I hate waiting. I wish it would hurry up, so I could know how I need to fix my budget.

My Car is Paid Off!

April 15th 2008 10:52
There is some good news in the midst of all the anger towards money that I mentioned yesterday. My car is now paid off. I had to raid my emergency fund to pay the last $1300 off but it was necessary because of the student loans that will be coming soon.

Yay for something being paid for, and it's done early! Plus, mom is paying $300 since I miss out on the stimulus payment simply because I was a student the whole time

The Random Hiatius

April 15th 2008 00:04
Sorry for the random disappearance. I think money has just been making me angry lately, so that I don't want to think about it at all (and therefore not write about it).

It's not that I'm not in my budget (which I am for now), but so much is still up in the air (like my student loan consolidation) and that I can't pay off my debt as fast as I want to pay it off

And the Answer Is...

April 9th 2008 11:06
A few days ago I asked a question about if a balance transfer would happen if I didn't call to activate my card. Apparently the answer is yes.

I checked my credit card last night that they should have transferred money from, and it was down the $850 that this new card had decided was a good amount. grr
