How Much Work is Too Much?
October 22nd 2007 15:46
I wrote about my job search earlier this semester and how I wound up with two jobs. Since these jobs are on-campus, they pay minimum wage. (Here, that's $5.85. Very sad).
This is enough to make my car payment and to pay the tuition that I put on my credit cards (To pay a little above the minimum payment on the cards, that is). However, it's not enough to do fun stuff that I want to do. Like visit friends in other states.
This is why I'm thinking about taking on a third job. Is this too much? The on-campus jobs only amount to 19 hours a week. I have it planned out, if I did get a third job at the mall (or other retail place for seasonal work) I could work these hours:
The rest of the times are either already taken with work or classes. Except Sunday which I have decided will be my one day off. (Plus, that's football day. I promise it is extremely necessary to watch 12 straight hours of football).
If I have one full day off, that means it's not too much right? I did write about a few friends here that work fulltime while being fulltime students. If they can do that, I can definitely do this.
Later today I'm starting my search!

I admire your dedication to your studies and paying your way. When I was at uni, I also worked for 20 hrs a week, plus prac and then all the uni work on top of the physical hrs of being there. And people say that the life of a student is easy, they have no idea.
Good luck with your decision,

I think it's quite possible to do, as long as you maintain a balance, and as long as you can recognise if things are starting to slip. I studied and worked full-time - it started to feel like a bit much, but I found I couldn't give up the extra money by that stage, I'd become too accustomed to having luxuries!
I'm sure you are quite capable, but don't put yourself under too much pressure. You'll need time to do what you want to do with the extra money you earn, after all!

The two on-campus jobs will go away when I graduate in December, which is why I wanted to get a non-school job - to make sure I had some form of work when graduation does happen!

The other is at the library and I'm applying for a full-time job there. So I don't really want to quit that one.
I haven't yet applied to a third job - I went and got an application to one of the stores at the mall but haven't turned it back in. The mall jobs around here wouldn't pay much more than what I'm making now and then I'd have to pay for gas as well.
But that's a good thought - and hopefully it will work out that way with my getting a full time job!
