Getting an On-Campus Job
July 30th 2007 12:25
I’m hoping to get a job when I get back to school for my final semester. I thought you all might be able to benefit from my pro/con list of having an on-campus job. Most of these assume you live on campus and don’t commute. Otherwise, the pros and cons won’t make sense.
Let’s start with the drawbacks:
1. Less pay – More than likely you’ll be making minimum wage or something very close to it. For instance, at my school the jobs I would work are $5.85/hr (higher than they were because of the minimum wage increase!).
The benefits:
1. No driving; no gas needed – If you do live on campus, you’ll be walking to work every day. All the money you make from this job will go directly to you, and not to all the gas stations. (Extra plus: exercise!)
2. Work around class schedule – They will be more likely to work around your classes than any other job. You could be at work, go to class for an hour, and then come back to work.
3. Homework – I know a few friends who were able to take their homework with them and do it when they weren’t busy. Not all schools or on-campus jobs may be able to do this, but if they allow it, it’s definitely a plus.
4. Non-smoking – I’m allergic to smoke so this is why I list it. The state where I go to school still allows smoking in restaurants. I wouldn’t be able to work there.
For me, I could only find one drawback to working on-campus. The pay isn’t great, but it’s better than not having a job (like I did last school year!)

other than that it is a dream for the circumstance. the pay is not bad either at $20 australian an hour which is a lot better than other jobs i can assure you.
there are some pros/cons though, it just depends on which way you choose to look at it:
my place of employment is right next to the university bar and so is my faculty building! and i probably spend as much time drinking, than studying and working combined!

Although, I'd like to work more than 20 hrs/wk this semester if it was allowed.
