Future Goals
August 7th 2007 12:56
I read somewhere that you are more likely to reach your goals if you write them down. So, I decided I would post all my future goals here regarding my finances so that you all can hold me accountable. Some of them are a little optimistic, so we’ll see if I can make them happen, but I hope I can. I may add new goals here occasionally. If I can achieve some of these loftier ones, maybe it’ll inspire others to set higher goals and make them. Plus, even if I don’t make the highest goal, I will have still knocked out so much of the debt that I won’t be sad that I didn’t quite make it.
To see the balances of things like my car loan or student loans you can check out my net worth IQ page.
I am going to label my goals as short, medium and long term. These will be 1-3 years, 4-10 years, and 10 plus years, respectively.
Short Term Goals:
* Build and maintain emergency fund (EF) to $1000 by July 2008
* Start a Roth IRA by July 2008
* Car loan paid off Jan. 2009 - will try to make this Dec. 2008 or earlier
* Pay off student loans by Dec. 2009 - this is obviously my very optimistic goal
Medium Term Goals:
* Build EF to $10,000 by July. 2011
Long Term Goals:
* By 2017 have contributed $30,000 to Roth IRA (less than the 4k a year allowed, but my first few years I may not be able to max out)
Some of the longer term goals are harder for me to make, simply because I’m not sure what’s realistic and what may be too easy for me to attain. Any suggestions would be great!
