College of Cash - finding money for college

College List (pt. 2)

June 5th 2007 13:42
In an attempt to be the most helpful site in affording college, I will be doing a continuing piece on specific colleges and universities in the United States and their scholarships/websites. (I will try hitting ones outside of the US at a later time). My brief summary of each will include a link to their financial aid page as well as other information I think may be helpful.

I plan on going in alphabetical order by state, and then in alphabetical order by the colleges in the state. I will be covering Divisions I, II, and III because every student has different needs. Each piece will cover at least one college from each Division.

Division I:

Alabama State University
Alabama State University: Institutional scholarships can be found here. Those are the ones that are for freshmen or transfer students. Other grants and scholarships are listed here, along with where you can find the application for each. There is a list to the left like most sites, that has work study and loan links.

Auburn University
Auburn University: The main scholarship page contains links to freshman, transfer, general, departmental and external scholarships. Links to the left include ROTC and Alumni scholarships. The main financial aid page, for forms and such, can be found here.

Division II:

University of Montevallo
University of Montevallo: Long ago this began as a women’s college, but is now co-ed. Their scholarship page is very extensive, including department specific (ex. College of Arts and Sciences, or College of Business). It states at the beginning that the ones marked with a # symbol have a special application that you must pick up.

University of North Alabama
University of North Alabama: The financial aid page can be found here. To the left are the links for grants and work study. The scholarships link on the left takes you to a page where the information is for the 2006 school year, so that’s not very helpful. However, here you can find two PDF files for excellence (which seems to be incoming freshmen) and transfer students.

Division III:

Hendrix College
Hendrix College: This college has a table with all the information about scholarships in it. It lists the name of the scholarship, how much it’s worth, eligibility and where the application is. I think more colleges should do it this way. Their grants and loans are done in the same style and can be found – guess where! – in the links to the left.

If there is a college you don’t think I will get to soon enough that you really would like to know about, leave a comment or email me with the full name of the college/university along with the location of it and I will put it in the next edition of “College Lists;” (this can include universities outside of the US!) The lists I am following can be found at: wikipedia.

Advice from my own personal experience:

** One thing I cannot stress enough is the importance of a campus visit. Sometimes you might think you want a big school, but when you check it out, you realize you’d rather go for something a little smaller.

**Also, I would suggest sending an email to the financial aid office, or residence hall office, or maybe to the dean of the college you will be in and see how efficient they are in writing you back. Those who respond quickly and give you the answers you need (or tell you where to find them) will be the same way when you are on campus. Those who take a while to respond and do not give helpful information will be the same way later on as well.
