College of Cash - finding money for college

Carnival of Money Stories #60

May 20th 2008 07:46
Welcome to the 60th edition of Carnival of Money Stories! If you missed the boat on getting your entries in, you can check out the Money Stories main page to get in on the action next time. I've separated the entries into different categories that I picked. No editor's picks here, everyone is equally amazing! Enjoy all the reading.

Making the Dough

Until Debt Do Us Part has an interesting article on a friend trying to generate a second income. In this story, second time's the charm.

At Saving to Invest you can find out the next three myths of the top ten on franchising.

FMF posts about his wife's "job offer." Some people are just crazy.

Ha! Here's another crazy job offer... found by Word of Mouth Marketing.

Getting Rid of Debt

Ryan at Debt Reduction Formula sold his motorcycle in 10 days. Wiped out a lot of debt in the process; way to go!

Debt Prison has a letter from a reader about the terrible issues with debt settlement companies.

Saving

How I Save Money goes over the always important emergency fund.

Save money on a trip to London! Take me! Roaming Tales blogs in part one about traveling around the city for cheaper.

Financial Zip asked a simple question to help someone find $100 in their budget.

Funny about Money saved $175 by trying what others said was not going to work.

My Two Dollars is moving to Taos to save money. It seems funny that moving saves you money, but I know it works.

The Personal Financier advocates using reminders (in outlook) so you don't spend extra money because of automatic renewals.

Living the Cheap Life says you can save money on postage by purchasing it online.

Think Your Way to Wealth asks "are you getting all the discounts you can on your car insurance?"

The Digerati Life wants to make sure you know the smart moves to lower health care costs.

Blueprint for Financial Prosperity writes on how to save 13-25% on college costs based on their own experiences.

Spending or Investing

Money Ning contemplates whether or not it's the right time to buy a house. What do you think? I'd say yes. No one can sell a thing; they'll sell it for cheap. At least, that's my theory.

Life, Money & Development goes over what they like about credit cards.

Ode to an Absent-Minded Husband was too amusing not to include it.

Investing in yourself is always a good thing. The Financial Blogger is going for an MBA and is finding other profits from doing so - not just money.

Not the Jet Set had some very good finds during some recent garage sale shopping.

Money and Fitness blog asks, should you shop early for presents to save money? I think it depends on if you have the space to store it for a while.

Investing Lessons has a list of 20 trading tips and techniques learned from a seminar.

Other

Veteran Military Wife writes about something called Quizzle. Does it work if you don't even own a home? I would get an F for that.

Single Guy Money has a story on people stealing gas... and not from gas stations.

HarvestingDollars learned from his prior mistakes (spending too much on a ring) to make a better purchase on other things later (like a house!).

My Dollar Plan has an update on the two-weeks-to-retire plan.

Money Blue Book writes about why financially stable men don't call their mothers. (Now I'll have to start paying attention to this! )

Paid Twice has a post about when free isn't really free. Like that iced coffee deal.

Chief Family Officer writes that there is a fine line between frugal, green and clutter free.

Can I Get Rich on a Salary has a success story about a nice retirement nest for someone at age 47. Sometimes these stories make me angry because I'm jealous.

Having your own restaurant is a difficult thing to do. But that's what Serena (guest-posting at Queercents) wants to do!

BripBlap writes about the generous gift he gave a (now former) employer.

Five Cent Nickel has an update on their appeal of their property tax re-assessment.

Be This Way writes about the best financial decision in her life - and it has to do with college.

Debt Free Playbook asks, could you cheat an honest man or woman?

Dollar Frugal has a list of house hunting tips you might find helpful.

And a Giveaway???

The Prince of Thrift is having a giveaway. All you have to do is ask him a question. How could I not include something about free stuff for the readers?

Next week's Carnival of Money Stories can be found at Piggy Bank Blues.

The Carnival of Money Stories will be coming to College of Cash this Tuesday, May 20th! Get your entries in. And please follow the guidelines. I don't like feeling mean by not including an article, so it's easier for me if your entry follows the rules!

Entries must be in by Monday 5pm Eastern US time. Thanks! See you there!

ps. I want to include this - if your post looks like spam, or if I think it's spam, it won't be included.

I Participated in a Carnvial

May 13th 2008 01:07
It's been a while since I participated in a carnival, mostly because my posting has been so sporadic. But I was included in today's Carnival of Personal Finance with my post "I Hate Being Angry and Stressed about Money."

Stop over and check it out. There are always good posts to read!

Saturday Links for 3/8/08

March 8th 2008 10:46
I participated in two carnivals this week! The Carnival of Debt Reduction and the Carnival of Money Stories.

The Carnival of Debt Reduction was at NCNblog this week. I was included with my post The Current Debt Reduction Plan.

The Carnival of Money Stories was at Piggybankblues. I was included with my post Sometimes I Hate Shopping.

Thanks to both blogs for hosting and including my posts!

As for other links...

The Financial Engineer asked a friend what she would do with $100,000. She was surprised by the answer, and so was I. Now, I could make that money last about three years or more. I could actually make it last about 10 years if I lived for those 10 years like I do now! But face it, no one will live like I do for 10 years.

Poorer Than You poses the question Grad School or No Grad School? Maybe some of you are in that position right now. If so, you should definitely check out her post!

Blogging Away Debt cashed in some change recently and found out her bank will count change for free. My roommate knew this about her bank and did the same thing last week. She wound up with $40 something! In change! Keep those pennies!

Happy reading and enjoy the weekend!

Saturday Links 2/23/08

February 23rd 2008 10:49
As you all know, I hosted the Carnival of Money Stories this week. But I also participated in the Festival of Frugality at Mighty Bargain Hunter. I was included with my post, "The End Slices."

Anothering interesting post from the Festival was "How to Get Stuff for Free" from not the jet set. I don't know if I would do all of the suggestions, but asking is easy. I've never looked at freecycle, maybe I should start?

One other post I found this week was at English Major's Money. "I Can't; I Can't Afford It" struck a cord because I sometimes feel the same way when I tell people that I can't do something - that they think I'm trying to get them to pay for it. Well, I don't want them to pay for it either.

Have a good weekend!

Carnival of Money Stories #47

February 19th 2008 11:10
Welcome to the Carnival of Money Stories edition #47! It's my first time being a host and I'm glad you stopped by. We've got plenty of good stuff waiting for you to read!

But first, I want to explain that when I think of a "money story" it is a personal experience, or a story of someone else's experience with money. I don't think of it as advice, unless the advice was tied into your experience. So, that's why I've included the following posts. I hope you enjoy them

I mentioned yesterday that Tuesday the Carnival of Money Stories is coming here! Yay!

Anyway, this will be a short links post today, because for some reason I didn't have a lot of time to surf around the net and find some good stuff. And I'm enjoying some time back in my hometown this weekend. But the first link is

Saturday Links 2/9/08

I have quite a few links from this week. I'm going to start with the carnivals I participated in; there were two. The first was the Carnival of Personal Finance over at Paid Twice. I was included with my post "My New Grocery Budget" under the running backs section. (It was superbowl week of course!) Second was the Festival of Frugality at Being Frugal. I was included with my post "I Only Buy Clothes with Gift Cards." It's funny, because I was a running back on that "team" too!

As for the other posts from the carinval and the festival that I liked (in no particular order

First off, I participated in the Festival of Frugality this week over at Mrs. Micah's blog. I was included for my post "Putting My Tuition Cards to Good Use."

Other good PF posts this week include Paid Twice's I'm a Cheetah, Not a Gazelle. I think I'd have to fall into her category of cheetah too. At least I think so
